RICHMOND, VA - JULY 2: Part of the inscription on the remaining portion of the massive Jefferson Davis Monument reads, "Not in hostility to others, not to injure any section of the country." This is from his farewell address in 1861. Protesters yanked down the statue of confederate president Davis, which stood on a lower pedestal at this site June 10, 2020. On July 1st, Mayor Levar Stoney ordered the immediate removal and storage of Confederate statues in Richmond for public safety reasons. Protesters gathering at statues and trying to remove them became a matter of public safety. Protests continue after the death of George Floyd, an African-American man from Minnesota, who died in police custody on May 25, 2020. (Photo by Annette Holloway/Icon Sportswire)
